Special Education

  • If you suspect that your child may need special education services, please call the Student Services Department at 313-242-0533. Child Find identifies resident children ages from birth through five years as well as school-age children six years and up who may be in need of special education services. Child Find offers evaluations to children suspected of having a disability at no charge. Following the evaluation, eligible children are referred to appropriate programs and services.
  • Special Education programs and services (which are provided to eligible students from birth to 26) include evaluation, support to students with disabilities in general education, and a full continuum of special education programs and services based on the LRE (least restrictive environment) appropriate for each student. Special education center programs provide services to students from South Redford and surrounding Western Wayne County school districts who are eligible for “low incidence” special education programs.

The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) Office of Special Education (OSE) has provided resources that provide parents and families with information about the special education system. The resources can be found on the Family Matters webpage, which offers multiple two-page briefs titled Family Matters Fact Sheets. The fact sheets are easy to read; give links to more in-depth resources intended to enhance public understanding of Michigan's special education system; and are available in English, Arabic, and Spanish. In Wayne County, each of our local school districts appoints one or two PAC representatives. Wayne County Parent Advisory Committee (WCPAC) members often serve as an information source for other parents in their community. Each monthly business meeting of the WCPAC includes a parent training segment on issues identified by its members. South Redford is represented. Please use the following link for further information:
