Multilingual Learner Services

At South Redford School District, we celebrate the rich linguistic and cultural diversity that over 10 languages bring to our classrooms. Our Multilingual Learner Program is dedicated to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment where every student thrives. We provide high-quality English instruction tailored to meet the unique needs of our multilingual learners, empowering them to succeed academically and beyond.
Communication from our Multilingual Learner Services department will mainly be conducted using the TalkingPoints messaging/texting app. TalkingPoints is a powerful platform designed to facilitate effective communication between schools and families, supporting over 100 languages. This app allows our staff to send messages directly to your phone in your preferred language, ensuring you stay informed and engaged with your child's education.  TalkingPoints will enhance our ability to connect with you and support your child's academic journey.
At South Redford, we offer the National Geographic Our World and Lift curriculum to our newcomer students. This innovative program is designed to immerse students in the English language through captivating real-world content. By integrating photography, meaningful stories, and engaging readings our curriculum not only motivates learners to use English but also broadens their understanding of the world around them.  Through this curriculum, our goal is to support newcomer students in developing their English language skills while sparking their curiosity and passion for learning about the world.

The WIDA assessment is a crucial tool used to measure the English language proficiency of our multilingual learners. This assessment evaluates students' abilities in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in English. Administered annually, typically in the spring, the WIDA assessment helps us tailor instruction to meet each student's unique needs and track their progress over time. By providing valuable insights, the WIDA assessment ensures that our English language learners receive the targeted support they need to excel academically and achieve their full potential.
